Cassie — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 September 2026
Cassie is a free study helper — a browser extension and web app that gives you
explanations, answers, and code for text you highlight. This policy explains
what Cassie does and does not do with your information. In plain terms:
Cassie has no server of its own, no account, and does not collect,
store, sell, or share your personal data.
What Cassie stores on your device
- Your API key — the free Groq API key (and, in the web app,
an optional Google Gemini key for images) that you enter. It is stored only in
your own browser's local storage on your device. It is never sent anywhere
except directly to that provider when you ask a question.
- Your settings — such as your chosen model.
- Answer history — recent questions and answers are saved
locally in your browser so you can review them. You can clear this at any time
from the extension's popup. It never leaves your device.
None of this is transmitted to the developer or to any server operated by Cassie.
There is no Cassie account, login, or backend.
What is sent when you ask a question
When you highlight text (or use "Ask about this page"), the selected text — or
the text of the page you chose — is sent, together with your question, directly
from your browser to the AI provider so it can generate a response:
- Groq — used for all text answers.
See Groq's privacy policy.
- Google Gemini — used only in the web app, and only for
images (generating pictures or reading a photo you attach).
See Google's terms.
These requests go straight from your device to the provider using your own API
key. The developer of Cassie never receives, sees, or stores this content.
What Cassie does NOT do
- No selling or sharing of your data with anyone.
- No advertising, and no third-party tracking or analytics added by Cassie.
- No hidden or background activity — Cassie only acts when you deliberately
highlight text or click its button.
- No collection of browsing history, keystrokes, or personal information.
Permissions
- Access to the pages you use it on — so it can read the text
you highlight and show the answer there.
- Storage — to save your API key, settings, and answer history
locally, as described above.
- Active tab — to read the current page's text when you click
"Ask about this page."
Children and intended use
Cassie is an open, visible homework and reading aid. It is not designed for use
during tests, quizzes, or other graded work.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated date above will change. Continued use of
Cassie means you accept the current policy.
